AEO tools are going mainstream. Here is what UK marketers should measure

AI search visibility platforms can now track prompts, mentions and citations at scale. The useful question is not whether to buy one, but how to separate directional signals from vanity metrics and connect the work to real business outcomes.

UK marketers have a measurement problem. Customers can now ask an AI service to compare suppliers, explain a product category or build a shortlist without visiting any of the brands under consideration. Yet most marketing dashboards still begin when somebody clicks.

This is no longer a fringe behaviour. Ofcom reported 252 million UK web visits to ChatGPT in August 2025, 156% more than a year earlier. Gemini, Claude and Perplexity also recorded sharp growth, albeit from smaller bases. The tools market is following the audience: HubSpot launched an AEO product on 14 April 2026, while Adobe announced Brand Visibility on 17 June 2026.

What is AEO in marketing?

Answer engine optimisation, or AEO, is the work of improving how often and how accurately a brand appears in AI-generated answers. It covers direct brand mentions, recommendations, product descriptions and links to supporting sources. Some suppliers call the same activity generative engine optimisation, or GEO.

AEO is not a replacement for SEO. Google says the same foundational SEO practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no extra technical requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. The difference is mainly in the unit of measurement. SEO commonly measures rankings, impressions and clicks. AEO also measures whether the answer mentions the brand, how it describes it and which sources support the response.

The practical conclusion is that most organisations do not need a separate AEO content factory. They need a new measurement layer across existing SEO, content, digital PR, product marketing and analytics work.

The AEO metrics that matter

A single visibility score is easy to present and hard to interpret. A useful dashboard should preserve the underlying prompt and response data, then report at least six measures.

  • Prompt coverage: The percentage of tracked questions in which the brand appears. Separate discovery prompts, comparison prompts, use cases and purchase-intent questions so that an improvement in one area does not conceal a weakness in another.
  • Citation rate: How often an owned page is linked as a source. Track citations separately from mentions, because an answer can recommend a brand while citing a review, publisher or competitor comparison page.
  • Competitive share of voice: The brand’s appearances as a proportion of all tracked brand appearances. Keep the prompt set and competitor list stable when comparing periods.
  • Description accuracy: Whether answers get prices, availability, features, locations and target customers right. A frequent but inaccurate mention may create more work for sales and support, rather than more demand.
  • Referral quality: Sessions, engaged visits, enquiries, sign-ups and revenue from AI referrals. OpenAI says ChatGPT search referral links include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can be used in analytics reporting.
  • Source influence: The domains and pages repeatedly cited for commercially important prompts. This shows whether the next action belongs to the content team, technical SEO, partnerships, customer reviews or digital PR.

Business outcomes still matter most. HubSpot reported that 42% of more than 3,000 CRM purchase decision-makers surveyed in January 2026 used AI search during evaluation, and that these buyers were 36% more likely to purchase. This is vendor research in one software category. It shows an association, not evidence that AI search caused the purchases.

How to track brand mentions in ChatGPT

No dashboard can provide a complete count of every time a brand appears to every ChatGPT user. AI answers can vary by model, location, search availability, prompt wording and personal context. Treat monitoring data as a repeatable sample, not a census.

  1. Build a fixed prompt panel. Start with 30 to 50 questions taken from customer interviews, sales calls, site search, support tickets and conventional keyword research. Include UK spelling, locations, regulations, prices in pounds and the language buyers actually use.
  2. Run the prompts consistently. An AEO platform automates repeated checks and records mentions, citations and competitors. Keep the platform, country, prompt wording and test frequency visible in reports. A score without its sampling method creates false precision.
  3. Join visibility to first-party data. Monitor ChatGPT referrals in analytics, AI-assisted enquiries in the CRM and the conversion rate of cited landing pages. For Google, check whether your property has access to the new generative AI performance report, which is being rolled out to a subset of site owners and covers impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Which AI search visibility tool is best?

The best choice depends less on the headline visibility score than on the team that must act on the findings.

  • HubSpot AEO: A logical shortlist option when HubSpot is already the operational centre of marketing. Its announced capabilities include CRM-informed prompt suggestions, citation analysis, competitor share of voice and recommendations connected to content execution. Treat HubSpot’s performance case studies as proprietary evidence, not neutral benchmarks.
  • Adobe Brand Visibility: Aimed at organisations that want enterprise-scale prompt intelligence connected to content operations and Adobe analytics. Adobe says the product combines Semrush data with Adobe optimisation tools and provides access to nearly 300 million prompts, audience reach, citations and competitive share of voice.
  • Ahrefs Brand Radar or Semrush AI Visibility: Sensible candidates when SEO already owns discovery reporting. Ahrefs documents prebuilt and custom prompt tracking across major AI platforms, while Semrush provides reports for mentions, citations, competitors, prompt gaps, sentiment and narrative drivers.
  • A specialist monitor: Tools such as OtterlyAI may suit agencies or smaller teams that want focused prompt monitoring without replacing their SEO or CRM platform. Its documentation says tracked prompts are checked daily across services including ChatGPT, Google AI features, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. Verify UK location support, exports, model coverage and historical retention during a trial.

Before signing a long contract, ask each supplier to run the same prompt panel. Compare the raw answers, not just the summary scores. Check whether the service uses live interfaces or APIs, how it handles personalisation, how often it reruns prompts and whether model changes are recorded.

A practical 30-day AEO workflow

  1. Week one, define the decisions. Choose two customer journeys and a small competitor set. Write prompts for awareness, problem research, comparisons and purchase. Assign each prompt an owner and a business value.
  2. Week two, establish the baseline. Record mentions, citations, answer accuracy, competitors and referral traffic. Check that important pages are indexable. If ChatGPT visibility matters, confirm that OAI-SearchBot is not unintentionally blocked.
  3. Week three, fix the clearest gaps. Correct outdated product facts, publish direct answers to recurring buyer questions and strengthen pages with original evidence. Where AI services repeatedly cite third-party sources, pursue legitimate reviews, expert contributions or editorial coverage rather than manufacturing mentions.
  4. Week four, rerun and review. Look for movement across several checks, not one favourable response. Keep changes that improve visibility and user outcomes. Drop activities that move a proprietary score without improving citations, qualified visits or answer accuracy.

Manage AEO with SEO, not instead of it

AEO deserves named ownership and its own reporting, but separating it completely from SEO would duplicate work and weaken accountability. Technical accessibility, useful pages, clear brand facts and credible third-party coverage matter across both channels.

The immediate next move is modest: build a UK-specific prompt panel, establish a baseline and connect AI referrals to the same commercial measures used elsewhere. Buy a platform only when manual checks become too slow or inconsistent. The value of an AEO tool is not that it produces another score. It is that it helps a team see where the brand is absent, inaccurate or unsupported, then decide what to change.
